Music Festivals
Music surrounds our islands like the ocean celebrating a fantastic range of outdoor music concerts happening every year from January to December. When you arrive at the airport or at the cruise ship terminal, you are greeted with music, island style (local stringband). In June 21st marks Fete De La Musique, a music festival that happens not just in Port Vila, but outer islands also in celebration of Vanuatu's francophone ties. During National Independence week every end of July, bands are performing everywhere where the celebration stalls are. October to November brings to the stage Fest'Napuan, region's biggest music festival where top local and international bands perform for several days, and Christmas in the Park closes the year nicely with festive vibes every early to mid-December.
Arts
Nawita Contemporary Arts
In 1987, several local artists met and discussed the establishment of a formal organisation of contemporary artists. The artists were trained in art at the training technical college and grew an active interest in creating 'contemporary arts' out of their more traditional skills in artefacts. Nawita Association, whereby 'Nawita' meaning 'octopus' so each tentacle represents a different artistic medium or form of expression, was established. Today the association boasts fine artworks and masterpiece from young and senior iconic artists, many of which you can buy their artwork and take home with you.
