Visitors come for Tanna's Mount Yasur, Santo's wrecks and Champagne Beach, and the easy mix of town and day trips around Port Vila on Efate. It still feels distinctly Melanesian, with Bislama, English and French spoken across six provinces.
Unlike many polished resort destinations, Vanuatu's islands remain community-owned, culturally distinct and often still guided by kastom. Landscapes change quickly from black-sand volcano country to rainforest and freshwater blue holes, and travel can feel more local than packaged. You can spend a morning at a Port Vila market and an afternoon on customary land, provided you ask permission and travel with respect.

First-timers and families often start on Efate, while divers, hikers and culture-focused visitors add Santo, Tanna or the outer islands. Most international visitors arrive at Bauerfield International Airport on Efate, a short drive from Port Vila. Some flights also serve Santo's Pekoa Airport near Luganville.
