Malekula is the second largest island and the most diverse, culturally and linguistically, with over thirty distinct languages spoken. Some of the best custom dances come from the island.
The names given to the primary cultural groups are Small Nambas and Big Nambas. Various cultural festivities take place throughout the year such as the Nalawan Festival which commemorates the act of worship to the god of the ancestors, before the first harvest of the crops.
The Nalint Big Nambas tribe puts on an earth pounding cultural arts display every year which tells the story of the first Big Nambas, to sacred performances, pig killing ceremonies to traditional cooking and mat weaving.
Communities of South Central Malekula are where the Small Nambas tribes can be found. Having retained their traditions for many centuries it is an opportunity not to be missed and experienced.
Visitors can hike into the most remotest village of Melkan where they can be accommodated in the jungle village and learn about the tribes ancient way of life.
