Yasur volcano - Tanna island

Vanuatu lies on top of the Pacific Ring of Fire and has nine active volcanoes, seven on land and two beneath the sea. Yasur volcano is the most popular and most easily accessible. Located in Tanna Island, Yasur brings thousands of tourists to Tanna Island each year, including the producers of Tanna movie which took the island, its volcano, and Vanuatu all the way to the Oscars and was nominated for an Award for 2017 Best Foreign Language movie.

Mt Marum and Benbow - Ambrym island 

Ambrym is known as the "black island" after the expansive ash plain covering the interior. This island is well known for its highly active volcanic activity that includes lava lake formations within the summit craters. Ambrym is the site of two active volcanic cones, Benbow and Marum which have attracted adventurous trekkers from around the world.

Mt Garet - Gaua island

Last erupted in 2010 after many years of dormancy. Today, fit tourists, can cross lake Letas and challenge themselves to a steep climb up the slopes of the dormant volcano. When tourists reach the top, they will discover why Mr Garet is known as the worlds most colourful and scenic volcanoes, with many different shades and tones or earthy red, brown and orange spread across the summit, including the crater lake which creates an unforgettable landscape. 

Lake Manaro - Ambae island 

Ambae Island is physically characterized by the large volcano at its centre, Manaro.  The island of Ambae, or Aoba, surprised the country which its volcano awoke in 2017 after centuries of silence. The Manaro, whose cone appeared in the middle of the lake, caused the inhabitants to be evacuated due to the volcanic ash fallout, sulfur fumes and lahars that quickly covered the island after the first bursts of volcanic activity. For now visitors are not encouraged to visit Ambae until the alert is lifted.

Lopevi - Lopevi island

Lopevi is the most beautifully shaped volcano in Vanuatu and has periodic eruptions. This volcano rises directly out of the ocean and has been belting out sulphurous ash since 2007, so this is a great chance to see the volcano is its active state.

  • Follow your guide's directions as they are trained and experienced to know the safest places for you to stand.
