The Vanuatu Adventure Race
Press Release, Edge Vanuatu: Next August will see Vanuatu join the world stage of Adventure racing. One of the fastest growing sports in the world. An Adventure race has multiple activities and usually includes trekking, Mountain Biking and rowing plus lots, lots more. Teams are given an instruction book and maps indicating checkpoints. Teams must navigate using Map & Compass to find these checkpoints.
The event is being organised by Troy Spann and Zeak Smith who have dreamed of this since moving to Vanuatu in 2005 to set up EDGE, Vanuatu’s first land-based adventure tourism company. The boys have already put a lot of effort into the race, by actually taking a couple of Mele boys over to Australia with Troy to compete in one, to make contacts and advertise our upcoming event. The race will start on Saturday afternoon the 21st of August with a Prologue event which will be a Rogaine on foot which will see them interacting with people from the Mele Maat and Mele. A Rogaine is like Orienteering except there is no set order in which checkpoint need to be obtained.
The race will start proper on Sunday the 22nd of August with an early start from the Beach Bar Mele Cove and will see the teams, swimming, running, Mountain Biking and rowing Outrigger Canoes as they make their way around Devils Point, through Havanah Harbour and finish the day at Siviri. Day Two is all about a trek that will take them over Mount MacDonald to the top of Klems Hill for an abseil down the Mele Cascades waterfall and back to where it all started on Sunday morning.
There are places for 50 teams of 2 and entries open on Monday morning the 4th of January. With the efforts the boys went through to promote their event it is expected to fill fast. So if there are any local teams that think they have what it takes to tackle the course and the international teams please contact Troy on 7753153 or email him This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You can check out the race website at www.racevanuatu.com. The EDGE boys are also tendering for next year’s Round Island Relay to get back to a responsibly, locally run event for international visitors and locals alike. The race is being rebranded the Vanuatu Island Relay to give it a fresh start. But they are not going to stop there, with plans for an Outrigger Canoe regatta on the Harbour and the strong possibility of a Multi-sport event in November.
The aim is simple, put on quality professionally run outdoor sporting events to attract international visitors and hold these events in the troughs in our visitor arrivals, the boys are committed to doing their part to boost numbers when it’s most needed.
