Preparations of Ambrym's first ever Sameou Festivolcano, are underway!  A first of its kind festival is scheduled to take place in Sameou Village, south east Ambrym, end of August. The event is proudly coordinated by the Sameou Festivolcano Committee on Ambrym, and is promoted by Trek Vanuatu. The festival will commence on 28th August and end on 1st September 2010, where guests will have the opportunity to witness cultural & eco activities that evolve around the Ambrym twin volcanoes, including trek, explore and camping out at the fest sites. Fest’Napuan 2010 : “Women In Music”
20-24 October 2010, Port Vila, Vanuatu

The Fest’Napuan Association is pleased to announce the logo, theme and dates for the Fest’Napuan 2010. Fest’Napuan 2010 will have the special theme of “Women in music”. Reflecting this theme, this year’s logo features a woman playing a bass guitar. The dates for Fest’Napuan 2010 are 20th to 24th October. As usual, the first day (the 20th) is the Fest’Nalenga, which features string band music, the next three days (21st-23rd) are Fest’Napuan proper, which showcases local and regional popular contemporary music, and the last day (24th) is Zion Fest which celebrates gospel and religious music. With a fantastic line-up of both local and International artists performing, Fest’Napuan is one of the premier events in the Pacific and one of the only independent, free events of its kind.

Port Sandwich Art & Culture festival new dates 2-5 August 2010

Port Sandwich Art & Culture festival organizers have announced new dates for the festival. The event will no longer be in July as per previous release, but will now be in August from 2nd to 5th. The festival marks 236 years after Captain James Cook first landed in Port Sandwich in 1774, and is celebrated with an array of cultural activities, history and art of south Malekula. Update from Mack, Grand Hotel & Casino / Iririki Island Resort & Spa: For all there, it was a great weekend of music and entertainment from one of the artists who truly has helped shape the Australian music industry into what it is. And for those who saw him in action there is no doubt as to why. Ross Wilson was quite the entertainer! Many on the Saturday night, last week, believed it was the best show yet.  Ross loved his time so much here he has assured me he'll be back. Thanks for all the support, and hope you all enjoyed the weekend of entertainment and for those that couldn't make it be sure to catch the next one. They truly are memorable nights!

 
International Friendly Beach Volleyball 5th June

On Saturday 5 June there will be a International Friendly beach volleyball match between Vanuatu and New Caledonia, for both men and women, at the Port Vila Beach Volleyball Stadium (Stade area). During the competition, people will have the opportunity to watch the Vanuatu Women Team in action! Stars, Miller & Henriette, will be in Brisbane Training at Sandstorm from Sunday 16th to Friday 21st May, before leaving to Korea FIVB World Tour Event. Good luck girls!

 
Back to my Roots cultural festival on the go

The organizers for the annual Back to my Roots cultural festival, which will take place in north Ambrym, Olal Village, from 25th – 27th August 2010, have released a full program of the festival. Accommodation is available at Ranon, Olal Mission, and yachts can anchor at Olal and Nobul, north Ambrym. Day one of the festival will feature custom dances, tam tam drum beatings, custom magic shows and Yeng Dance, which will be the highlight of the day. The second day will commence with a Women’s custom dance, followed up on Namangi ceremony (highlight), flute demonstrations, sand drawings and more custom magic shows.

Port Sandwich Yacht Festival gearing up

The new confirmed date for the Port Sandwich Art and Culture Festival is from 26-29 July. The festival will be a three days event of custom dance from the two local custom dance groups, a circumcision ceremony, sand drawing, snorkelling, hiking, custom crafts, and local foods. Every night will have live string band music, DJ, kava, and tusker. The price is 7000vt which includes all custom displays for three and a half days plus transportation to the nakamals. Tickets will be sold at the Vanuatu Cultural Centre in Vila, Wrecks to Rainforests in Santo, and at the Port Sandwich library/book exchange.

Charity Dinner for the Vanuatu Red Cross Society

In support of the Haiti earthquake victims of January 12, 2010 which severally affected more than 3 million people, caused 230,000 deaths, 300,000 injured and more than a million left homeless, following an appeal from Haiti to the international community, emergency aid from around the world, the Vanuatu Red Cross Society plans to hold a Fundraising Gala Dinner, donating all funds raised to the Haitian Red Cross Society. The charity dinner will take place at Saturday, May 29, 2010, from 7.30pm at Le Lagon Resort & Spa. With the theme “Africa: Safari in Kenya”, the organizing committee is planning a memorable, colourful, and emotional evening ... as can only be found in Africa!

Vanuatu Ocean Swim entries are coming through

Registrations are coming in for the Vanuatu Ocean Swim in Port Vila on June 12th, and the Espiritu Santo Aore Swim on  June 15th. The Vanuatu Ocean Swims will again feature a 3.2km and 1.5km swims in Port Vila's picturesque harbour, and the challenging 2.6km crossing of the Segond Channel from Luganville to the beautiful Aore Resort. With these 3 amazing vocalists, performing together for this one off musical extravaganza, with a multitude of international awards, worldwide tours, and tens of thousands of record sales between them, this was one concert hundreds didn't want to miss! Families, friends and guests grabbed a picnic blanket and headed over to the part below Sunset Lagoon Pools on Iririki Island for a special lazy Sunday afternoon, to watch Elena Baravilala (Fijian Idol), David Auna (Solomon Island’s Idol), and Vanessa Quai (Pacific Songbird).

In this week’s Vanuatu Infos, and the Vanuatu Daily, feedback has it that the shows were mind blowing and the audience look forward to his second trip back to Port Vila, which Guy, who is currently making it big in the US hit charts, plans on returning for another gig, after 3 to 4 months in “The Big Apple”. Guy Sebastian’s shows were made possible, with compliments by Grand Hotel & Casino, and Iririki Island Resort.

Angel Strings play the whole range from classical to rock, and pop music.

Nalawan Festival to be hosted in August

The third Nalawan festival will commence on the 11th August, and like every year, it is a favourite attraction for the yachties, cruise guests, as well as communities on Malekula. This year, the festival will firstly take place at Labo Village, then Lembinwan Village, and lastly Ten Stick Island in south west Malekula .The Nalawan marks the start of a new season in the traditional calendar and includes grade- taking ceremonies, spectacular custom dances, pig killing, the ancient Noho ritual with offerings to the gods of the land and much more. During the days leading up to the festival, there will be cultural events held at the Lembinwan Yacht Club, as well as snorkeling at the nearby Ten Stick Island, and in the large Marine Protected Area at Labo Village which makes the snorkeling excellent.

On the 4th of February 2010, American Barista & Coffee School’s Matt Milleto sent his article to the VTO, and barista 2009 organizers, which he wrote about his experiences during his trip to Barista Vanuatu last year. The article is published in Barista Magazine on page 60-63, which can be read here http://baristamagazine.epubxpress.com/bam1 . Matt also has several other follow up stories which he is currently working on, planned for Barista Exchange, as well as a blog for the website Coffee Review about coffee in Vanuatu. The aim of having the festival is to showcase the present customs and traditions of the Small Nambas community, and to revive the olden traditions in a rich and vibrant 3 days festival. The festival invites international visitors, and the general public will witness traditional wedding ceremony, circumcision ceremony, ancient traditional tricks and games, sand drawing, outrigger canoe carving, ancient magic of Wala, authentic handicraft, food preparation, ancient village life, custom dances and more.
